Congress votes TODAY on Iraq and Afghanistan!

This week has felt like déjà vu in Washington. Once again, hawks like Dick Cheney and Senator John McCain are beating the drums of war to invade Iraq, while President Obama mulls his authority to bomb a country in the Middle East without new Congressional authorization. Meanwhile, 9,800 troops are slated to serve in Afghanistan next year, with little reassurance of their mission or security. Amidst the confusion and chaos of the crisis in the Middle East, one thing is clear: Washington, DC needs to hear from you!

Luckily, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) has introduced several amendments to the Department of Defense Appropriations Bill to push back on the rush to war.

Congress will vote on Rep. Lee’s amendments TODAY, and so it’s imperative that you call your Representative NOW!

Sample Script:

“Hi I’m ______ and I’m a constituent calling from ______. I’m calling to ask Rep._____ to support Rep. Barbara Lee’s amendments to HR4870. Rep. Lee’s amendments would repeal the 2001 AUMF, bring our troops home from Afghanistan, and make sure we do not restart the Iraq War. Thank you!”

Here is a little more information on Rep. Lee’s amendments:

2001 AUMF
  • SUPPORT Rep. Barbara Lee’s amendment to repeal the 2001 authorization for the use of military force (AUMF). The 2001 is the legal foundation of the global war on terror. It has been used to justify some of the worst abuses of the past 13 years from Guantanamo to torture to drone strikes. It’s time to end endless war.

  • SUPPORT Rep. Lee’s amendments to bar any combat troops from being sent to Iraq and repeal the Iraq war authorization. Ending the Iraq War wasn’t a mistake. Restarting it would be.
  • SUPPORT Rep. Lee’s amendment to bring all U.S. troops home from Afghanistan by December 31, 2014. With no military solution to the challenges in Afghanistan, it’s long past time to fully end America’s longest war.

Please take two minutes right now to call your Representative on these important issues. Call toll-free 1-855-686-6927 TODAY!

After you’ve called, please let us know any feedback you received. Please report your call and invite your friends and family to call their Representatives!
