Calls Needed: Congress Votes Today!

It’s no secret that Washington is broken and that Congress doesn’t do much anymore. But every year, there are a few days where Members of Congress vote on some of the biggest questions facing our government, like when and how to go to war and how much money to spend on those wars. Today is one of those days.

Today, Members of the House of Representatives will debate and vote on a series of amendments to the annual defense policy bill, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). It’s a massive bill that sets much of America’s military and foreign policy for the year and authorizes more than half a trillion dollars in spending at the Pentagon.

And as part of their work, the House will debate and vote on four key amendments being offered to make smart, common sense, reforms. Members of Congress are deciding right now how to vote on these important amendments, and that’s why they need to hear from us!

Call your Representative right now at (202) 224-3121 and ask them to support these important amendments to H.R. 4909, the National Defense Authorization Act:

- Amendment #5 – Offered by Rep. Barbara Lee
- Amendment #6 – Offered by Rep. Jared Polis
- Amendment #7 – Offered by Rep. Keith Ellison
- Amendment #9 – Offered by Rep. Keith Ellison

Sample Script: “Hi, my name is ______ and I’m asking Rep. _______ to support Amendments 5, 6, 7, and 9 to H.R. 4909. It’s time to stop trying to bomb our way to peace.”

Please take two minutes right now to ask Congress to vote for peace!

These four amendments represent real, meaningful steps towards peace that Congress could enact right now.

Amendment #5 – Offered by Rep. Barbara Lee would repeal the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force. Passed 15 years ago in the hours after September 11th, this war authorization has been used dozens of times from Africa to southeast Asia. It’s long past time to cancel this blank check for war.

Amendment #6 – Offered by Rep. Jared Polis would simply make a 1% cut to the massively bloated Pentagon budget. Making the Pentagon save one penny out of every dollar that it spends is a common sense way to protect our tax dollars and force the military to spend its budget on keeping America safe and not padding the pockets of Pentagon contractors.

Amendment #7 – Offered by Rep. Keith Ellison would strike dangerous language in the NDAA designed to prolong and extend the war in Afghanistan. It’s time to end America’s longest war, not make it bigger and force it to go on even longer.

Amendment #9 – Offered by Rep. Keith Ellison would undo the multi-billion dollar gimmick House Republicans are trying to use to increase spending at the Pentagon. By piling billions into the Pentagon’s slush fund, House Republicans are trying to break a budget deal they reached only months ago, and this amendment would help prevent that.

Call your Representative now at (202) 224-3121 and ask them to support these important amendments.

Members of Congress keep track of each and every phone call to their office. Before they vote, let’s make sure that they hear our calls for peace.
