It’s almost too terrifying to believe. In a matter of minutes, with no one able to stop him, Donald Trump could launch a nuclear war that would literally kill everyone on the planet. Thankfully, Congress can do something to make sure that never happens.
Presidents have always had the ability to launch America’s nuclear arsenal on a moment’s notice. It’s a system that was designed to defend against an incoming attack, but under the current law, there’s nothing to stop a president from launching such a war unprovoked. No one person – and definitely not someone as erratic and reckless as Donald Trump – should ever be able to single-handedly start such a deadly war.
We can change this. Right now, two members of Congress, Rep. Ted Lieu and Sen. Ed Markey, have introduced legislation to prevent the U.S. president from launching a nuclear war without a declaration of war by Congress. While the President would still be able to defend from an attack against America, they could no longer launch the deadliest weapons ever invented just because they wanted to.
Donald Trump has displayed a pattern of reckless behavior when it comes to national security. He held a critical meeting to discuss classified information about North Korea in public at his Florida resort, he allowed a friend to take a selfie with the nuclear football, and he has openly questioned why we can’t use nuclear weapons in current conflicts. No one who behaves this recklessly should have the ability to launch a war that would kill everyone on the planet.
There is no overstating the destruction of a nuclear war, and we are closer to that horror today than we have ever been before. We owe it to ourselves and to future generations to take action now to step back from the brink of nuclear war. Please sign today.
