Statement on President Trump’s recent comments about the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, VA

Stephen Miles, Director of Win Without War and Michelle Dixon, Director of the Global Progressive Hub released the following statement in response to President Trump’s recent comments about the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, VA:
President Donald Trump on Tuesday doubled down on his statement over the weekend that there were “many sides” to blame for the violence that resulted from white supremacist rallies in Charlottesville, VA. In fact, and what’s even more troubling, is that Mr. Trump went further and appeared to defend white supremacists, saying there were “fine people on both sides.”
This kind of rhetoric would be reprehensible if made by any citizen. But the fact that the President of the United States essentially defended neo-Nazis and white supremacists is beyond the pale and further serves as a glaring indication that President Trump is not suited for the office he currently occupies.
The President’s support for hate-filled, white supremacists marching through the streets of Charlottesville with torches in hand and hate in their hearts, his refusal to unequivocally denounce their violence that resulted in the death of Heather Heyer, and his continued support for senior White House aides like Steve Bannon, Sebastian Gorka, and Stephen Miller with ties to racists, fascists, and neo-Nazis is simply unacceptable.
As Americans, we cannot promote and defend the rights of the marginalized at home and around the world if our President is defending those who seek to take them away. We will continue that fight, and we will continue to hold Donald Trump accountable for his actions and words as long as he remains in the Oval Office.
