WashingtonWin Without War Executive Director, Sara Haghdoosti, released the following statement responding to the breakdown of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip:

“We are heartbroken at the resumption of large-scale fighting in Gaza. The breakdown of this ceasefire threatens the lives of millions of Palestinians, reverses vital progress on humanitarian access in Gaza, and prevents hostages from reuniting with their families. There needs to be a lasting peace in Gaza, which respects the dignity of Palestinians and Israelis alike, and that will not be brought about by continuing this horrific war.

“This return to violence does not come as a surprise, however. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has, from the beginning, signalled his intention to abandon the ceasefire process before it could become a lasting peace. From before his first day in office, President Trump has endorsed the Netanyahu government’s return to war. Indeed, we fear that Trump’s vile plan for ethnic cleansing in Gaza, so welcomed by the far-right members of Netanyahu’s government, will become the blueprint for the war as it goes forward.

“A $7.4 billion arms sale to the Israeli government was recently notified to Congress – weapons that Netanyahu could use to carry out Trump’s vision of a Gaza without Palestinians. Selling those weapons would be illegal and profoundly immoral. We urge Congress to reject the sale, and do everything in its power to bring this war to an end.”
