The Senate’s Simple Litmus Test: Uphold Human Rights, or Defend the Indefensible

Washington – Win Without War Executive Director, Sara Haghdoosti, released the following statement on S.Res.195, a resolution demanding answers about the Trump administration’s policy of disappearing people to a megaprison in El Salvador:
“A vote for S.Res.195 means support for human rights, the rule of law, and the lives and freedom of the hundreds of people living in the United States whom President Trump has deported to the Salvadoran government’s infamous Terrorism Confinement Center. A vote against means supporting more masked agents descending on our communities and ripping families apart with no regard for the Constitution, the courts, or human decency. The public will long remember on which side their elected representatives came down.
“The Trump administration has ignored court orders demanding the safe return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia and others, sent taxpayer dollars to the Salvadoran government to fund its prison, and turned a blind eye to Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele’s egregious human rights record. President Trump wants to continue disappearing our neighbors to a megaprison in El Salvador, where they risk being tortured and held indefinitely without due process. If passed, S.Res.195 will require the administration to explain what it knows about human rights violations in Salvadoran government prisons and whether U.S. security assistance is aiding this inhumanity. And whether or not it passes, the vote will demonstrate how many senators care about upholding Congress’ basic powers, and how many are willing to shamelessly support the indefensible.
“Trump and his cronies want us to believe that if they just move quickly to break our institutions and bulldoze our rights, they can keep doing it indefinitely. This week, the Senate has the opportunity to set the record straight. We urge all senators to vote to pass S.Res.195 and send the clear message that, when the people demand a president stop trampling their rights, they mean it.”
