Win Without War Welcomes Resolution Condemning Calls for Military Action in Mexico

Washington – Win Without War Executive Director, Sara Haghdoosti, welcomed the introduction of Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX)-led resolution condemning calls for military action in Mexico:
“We welcome the resolution from Representative Joaquin Castro that condemns calls to conduct unilateral military actions there. And we deplore the reckless threats from the Trump administration that make this resolution necessary.
“President Trump’s threats to invade Mexico are both a dangerous possibility and a despicable sleight of hand. He is selling a false promise to thousands of families grieving over losses from our nationwide fentanyl crisis: the ludicrous idea that we’re a drone strike, or a special operations forces raid, away from halting cross-border drug-trafficking. Meanwhile, his cronies Elon Musk and Russell Vought are shutting down support to local clinics and national health initiatives, rolling up our public health infrastructure and inevitably making those struggling with fentanyl use even more dependent on an illicit drug trade that profits the cartels.
“Unauthorized, unilateral military operations in Mexico are unlikely to halt the drug trade, which has only evolved, and not ended, in the face of our failed war on drugs. Instead, they risk rupturing ties with our southern neighbor and largest trading partner, increasing violence and displacement within Mexico, and putting our servicemembers in harm’s way, all so the president can play tough on TV.
“Without forceful pushback from Congress and communities at home, the administration may drag us into a new endless war just across the border. We urge members to cosponsor this resolution, and use it as an opportunity to communicate to constituents the futility and danger of this radical action.”
