Withdrawal of U.S. Troops From Iraq a Bittersweet Milestone

Last Updated on October 1, 2026.

WASHINGTON – Following news that the last U.S. troops withdrew from Iraq this week, Win Without War Deputy Director Shayna Lewis released the following statement:

“For an organization founded in 2002 to oppose the U.S. invasion of Iraq, the withdrawal of U.S. troops should be cause for celebration. Indeed, the draw down of the U.S. military presence in Iraq is the product of millions of people of conscience in the United States who insisted on making their voices heard over decades.

“Unfortunately, this milestone is overshadowed by the reality that the U.S. government continues to perpetrate needless, unaccountable violence across the Middle East, most recently with President Trump’s disastrous war on Iran.

“While we welcome the departure of U.S. troops who never should have been in Iraq in the first place, this week’s withdrawal does not even mark the end of destabilizing U.S. intervention in Iraq. Sites across Iraq have recently been bombed within the context of the Iran war. Due to  Trump’s failure to end that war, as well as the U.S. government’s colonial control of Iraq’s oil revenue, more violence is likely and Iraqi sovereignty remains under threat.

“Our work to rein in U.S. militarism remains as urgent today as it was in 2002.”
