House Whiffs on War Powers, Ignores the Will of the People

WASHINGTON – In response to votes on two war powers resolutions in the House of Representatives, Win Without War Government Relations Director Eric Eikenberry released the following statement:
“Today, a narrow majority of the House of Representatives made a disgraceful choice to vote down resolutions that would have walked us back from President Trump’s disastrous regime change war in Venezuela and ended a raft of lawless killings in the waters of Latin America.
“Whether members of that slim and fragile majority were too in thrall to the president, or failed to see through a volley of lies about the drivers of our domestic overdose crisis, unfortunately doesn’t matter. The result is the same: Congress missed an opportunity to check an out-of-control executive who revels in ordering extrajudicial killings and promises war for oil, lives in the U.S., Venezuela, or throughout Latin America be damned.
“People across the United States have made their voices clear. Firm majorities reject a war on Venezuela and the murder campaign in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific.
“As long as the administration continues its reckless and lawless schemes, the people will look to their elected representatives to rein it in. And if Representatives McGovern, Massie, Meeks, and the rest who led today’s push keep at it, they will succeed and Trump’s campaign of pointless violence will fail.”
