Senate Democrats Unite to Block Trump’s War Budget

Washington – Win Without War Deputy Director Shayna Lewis released the following statement in response to today’s Senate vote rejecting cloture on the motion to proceed to debate on the Fiscal Year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
“Not one more dime for a lawless president’s lawless wars. Today, every Senate Democrat present joined together to block one of Congress’s most reliably enacted annual bills. We thank the senators who voted against advancing the FY2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) and its astronomical plus-up for the Pentagon.
“As the Trump administration tries to lock Congress into a $1.5 trillion Pentagon budget while refusing to suspend its illegal military operations against Iran, lawmakers should be demanding accountability — not handing the administration another blank check for a disastrous war that is killing thousands, driving up the cost of living, and putting public funds that could go toward healthcare and infrastructure investment into the pockets of arms dealers.
“As Congress considers any future defense legislation, including the NDAA, appropriations bills, reconciliation bills, or supplemental funding requests, it must reject efforts to sidestep debate over unauthorized war and unchecked Pentagon spending. Members can no longer ignore the tradeoffs they are imposing on their constituents — millions of people facing cuts to healthcare, food assistance, housing, education, and other essential programs — to feed an insatiable war machine.
“We urge Congress to continue using every opportunity it can to demand an end to the administration’s reckless military agenda through meaningful accountability measures, stronger congressional oversight, and a commitment to investing in the real sources of security.”
