WASHINGTON – In response to the House passage of H.R.8800 — the FY27 NDAA — and H.Con.Res.113 — the Iran war budget reconciliation resolution — Win Without War Government Relations Director Eric Eikenberry released the following statement:

“President Trump is threatening war crimes against Iranian civilians, U.S. servicemembers are being killed, and energy costs are again on the rise — all for the sake of a disastrous, unpopular, and illegal war. Today, the perpetually-in-over-its-head House majority leadership responded by pulling out its checkbook and jamming through a disastrous $1.15 trillion National Defense Authorization Act, plus tens of billions more for the Iran war in a separate and shameful budget reconciliation gambit.

“The House NDAA is a green light for Trump and Secretary of Defense Hegseth to further politicize the Pentagon, commit war crimes across the world, and direct funds that should expand healthcare access and ease the cost-of-living crisis to senseless war and violence instead. 

“That’s not the only way ‘defense’ is once again being twisted to make us all less safe. The bill also contains a dangerous provision to further integrate the U.S. and Israeli militaries, even as the genocide in Gaza continues. And Speaker Johnson, hell bent on turning the exercise of the right to vote into a Kafka-esque ‘show me your papers’ nightmare, even triggered a procedural gimmick to tie this bill to the voter-suppressing SAVE Act on final passage.

“‘Reconciliation 3.0’, meanwhile, is the total abandonment of Congress’ basic constitutional role — a rush to funnel $73 billion towards an unauthorized Iran war that will cost many times that if Beltway hawks have their way.

“The system of checks-and-balances that protects our democracy is evaporating in front of us because of days like today. We thank the members who choose to represent the people, rather than rubber stamp more endless war. We urge the Senate to swiftly shut down similar measures when they are brought up for a vote in the coming weeks.”
