Lawless President Escalates Lawless War

WashingtonIn response to President Trump’s assertion that the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran is “over,” Win Without War Deputy Director Shayna Lewis released the following statement:

“Last month, Congress enacted the will of the people and ordered President Trump to end his disastrous war on Iran. Today, he is escalating it instead.

“If Trump carries out the threats he made in his tantrum at the NATO summit, many people – including United States servicemembers, Iranian civilians, and people across the region – will die. His orders to target civilian infrastructure will harm Iranians while exposing the U.S. military to further legal liability and moral injury from war crimes. The global economic crisis that his war has sparked will worsen and people here at home and abroad will suffer the costs. In the end, all this will only produce more of what Trump’s illegal war has already given us: destruction, waste, and dimming prospects for long term peace.

“Congress has already acted to prevent these escalations, ordering Trump to withdraw U.S. forces from hostilities by passing S.J.Res.104 and H.Con.Res.38. Those resolutions are the law of the land, and Trump is flouting them. We do not accept a president who believes he is above the law, and Congress should not either. The clearest immediate path to enforcing the law is for members to refuse one more dime – much less the $67 billion Trump has requested – to continue a war that has left people struggling and the world less safe.”
