We Will Not Forget About Torture.

WASHINGTON, DC — Win Without War Director Stephen Miles released the following statement on the Senate’s vote to confirm Gina Haspel to become the next CIA Director:

“Today marks another shameful step in our country’s tortured history with torture.

“While it’s one thing that we haven’t fully accounted for the Bush-era torture program, it’s well beyond comprehension that we are rewarding top officials who played a key role in it.

“We commend those Senators who took a stand and said ‘No.’ But those who supported Gina Haspel’s nomination — both Republican and Democrat — should be ashamed.

“If the only bright spot in Haspel’s confirmation process was that she pledged never to restart torture at the CIA, it’s a sad testament to lowering the bar of progress to the floor of the status quo. Haspel’s confirmation does not mean our efforts for a full reckoning of torture will end, nor will we back down from holding Haspel to that pledge.”
