WashingtonIn response to President Trump’s latest claims about his lawless Latin America military campaign during the State of the Union, Win Without War released the following statement:

“During his State of the Union address, Trump doubled down on false and inflammatory claims about a ‘narcoterrorism’ bogeyman, in service of a new endless war across Latin America. Meanwhile, he conveniently glossed over the fact that he spent his first year in office ripping healthcare away from millions of Americans and attacking public health programs, even those that keep people struggling with drug use — including fentanyl — alive and afloat.

“But as reports emerge that this cynical ‘war on drugs’ has cost $2.9 billion and counting, it’s time we knew exactly what we’re paying for.

“Today, we’re sharing the U.S. taxpayers’ receipt for the billions Trump has spent on lawless violence in Latin America – and all the ways that money could have been spent to save lives at home.

“It captures nearly $3 billion the Trump administration has spent to kill 154 people in the Caribbean and Pacific. Those funds could’ve paid for healthcare coverage, emergency overdose treatments, and community grants that help steady lives in freefall in the face of addiction. There’s scant evidence that military strikes have slowed the flow of fentanyl into the United States. In fact,  previous improvements in overdose trends have been driven largely by public health interventions and international precursor controls

“Last night, President Trump attempted, yet again, to sell a false bill of goods to the American people. Today, we’ve got the receipts to prove it.”
