A First Step Toward Ending This War

WASHINGTON – Following news that the U.S. and Iranian governments have agreed to a framework for negotiations to end Trump’s war on Iran, Win Without War Deputy Director Shayna Lewis released the following statement:
“We welcome news of de-escalation in the Middle East, and sincerely hope that negotiations over the next 60 days provide a durable end to Donald Trump’s disastrous, foolish, illegal war on Iran.
“Trump’s war of choice has been a catastrophe from the start. Since Trump abandoned diplomacy and launched unauthorized airstrikes across Iran, over 7,000 people have been killed, including 13 U.S. servicemembers, thousands more have been wounded, and a global energy crisis has left families reeling. This deal, if successful, will bring a much-needed end to the violence, but it does nothing to absolve Trump of his responsibility for the destruction he’s caused.
“There are still many challenges to overcome to end this war. The Trump administration has shown little willingness to negotiate in good faith. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues his attempts to scuttle a deal with murderous strikes in Lebanon. While hawks in Congress have repeatedly demonstrated their appetite for ever-more escalation in Iran, others have lacked the political courage to vote to end the violence.
“The only way this war will end is through diplomacy. To make sure any deal fulfills its potential, lawmakers must respond to the historic public opposition to this war by doing everything they can to pressure Trump toward peace. The Senate must pass a War Powers Resolution to match the historic House vote repudiating the war, and both houses must reject the administration’s shameless attempts to secure more funding for weapons and wars that have failed to keep anyone safe.”
