Trump Creates Another National Security Crisis by Reimposing Sanctions on Iran

WASHINGTON, DC — Win Without War Director Stephen Miles released the following statement in response to the Trump administration re-imposing nuclear related sanctions on Iran:
“The United States today reimposed sanctions on Iran that were lifted as part of an international agreement to curb Iran’s nuclear program, a move that represents yet another in a series of Donald Trump’s self-inflicted national security crises.
“By all accounts, including from our own intelligence services, Iran has been in compliance with the 2015 accord, thereby removing the risk of Iran developing nuclear weapons.
“Trump’s decision to violate the deal and reimpose sanctions not only risks restoring that threat, but it also needlessly escalates tensions with Iran, emboldens Iranian hardliners, and further drives a wedge between the United States and Europe, which has pledged to preserve the agreement.
“We support these efforts by our European friends and we hope they succeed. However, we should also understand that the risk of the deal unraveling is now extremely high, and with that, the path to war with Iran is now clearer than it has been in years.”
