Congress Must Say ‘Not One More Dime’ for Trump’s Illegal War

WASHINGTON – In response to the White House’s request for $67 billion to fund President Trump’s war on Iran, Win Without War Deputy Director Shayna Lewis released the following statement:

“Just yesterday, Congress ordered President Trump to end his disastrous war on Iran in a historic war powers vote. Today, Trump responded by demanding another $67 billion for the war. No member of Congress, particularly those who voted to enact the will of the people and demand peace this week, should approve another dime for this utter disaster of a war.

“Each dollar spent on Trump’s war is a dollar stolen from communities that desperately need it and shifted directly into the pockets of Trump’s favored arms dealers and oil barons. Trump’s war and his cuts to health care and immigration have caused a cost of living crisis that will take families years to recover from. We see through his underhanded efforts to pass the bill by tacking on other spending priorities to this request. Congress can pass these through another standalone measure or standard appropriations bills – either way, they still won’t amount to even a bandaid for the damage done by the war.

“Handing Trump more money for his Iran war will only embolden him to break the current ceasefire at the first convenient opportunity. We know from hard experience that Trump’s instinctive response to any diplomatic challenge with the Iranian government is to drop more bombs, risking millions of lives, including those of servicemembers deployed to the region. Congress must continue to apply every ounce of pressure to prevent him from once more lurching down that path — rejecting this supplemental, just as it has rejected this war.”
