Three Years On, U.S Still Owes Afghans
Last Updated on September 17, 2024.
Washington – Win Without War Executive Director Sara Haghdoosti released the following statement on the three year anniversary of the U.S. military’s withdrawal from Afghanistan:
“Three years after the United States’ vital and long-overdue military withdrawal from Afghanistan, we once again applaud the Biden Administration for taking this crucial step.
Yet there is still so much work to be done. After two decades of war, over 12 million people in Afghanistan are facing acute food insecurity and tens of thousands who worked with U.S. personnel are still awaiting approval from a broken visa system to enter the U.S. and build new lives.
“People in the United States understand the debt we owe to Afghans after a twenty year occupation. Measures to ensure Afghan refugees can stay in the country, like the Afghan Adjustment Act, are overwhelmingly popular across party lines. Yet Congress has failed to pass these measures, with Republicans derailing important initiatives at every turn. It is past time for Congress to take real action to ensure that Afghans seeking refuge from the chaos wrought by the U.S. invasion can find it here.”
