Trump’s latest budget proposal prioritizes war over diplomacy

Win Without War Director Stephen Miles released the following statement regarding Donald Trump’s proposed FY2019 federal budget:

Donald Trump’s latest budget proposal shows us once again that this administration prioritizes war over diplomacy in solving complex national security issues around the world.

Despite recommendations from 151 retired admirals and generals, as well as 1,215 veterans from every branch of the military across the country, Trump’s plan shamelessly slashes budgets for diplomacy and foreign aid, while throwing billions more taxpayer dollars at the Pentagon, which is already rampant with waste, fraud, and abuse.

To add insult to injury, Trump’s budget cuts funding for research on climate change, slashes the Environmental Protection Agency’s budget to 1990s levels, and guts the renewable energy office while providing billions more on new nuclear weapons we don’t need. In other words, this budget invests in the weapons of yesterday’s wars by slashing funding to confront tomorrow’s security threats.

We need smart power, not dumb militarism, and Trump’s latest budget priorities not only fail to enhance our security, but they actively serve to make us and the world less safe.
