Win Without War Statement: Jeff Sessions should resign

Last Updated on March 2, 2017.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is in hot water after reports that he provided false testimony under oath about meetings with Russian officials during the 2016 presidential campaign.
“It is simply unacceptable for the nation’s top law enforcement official to commit a crime and keep his job,” said Win Without War Director Stephen Miles. “Jeff Sessions must resign immediately. Period. Additionally, the American public deserves an independent investigation into the Trump Administration’s repeated attempts to cover up this ongoing scandal.”

WASHINGTON — Attorney General Jeff Sessions must resign immediately for lying under oath about whether he had any contact with Russian officials during last year’s presidential campaign. Sessions’ successor must also appoint an independent special prosecutor to launch a full investigation into connections between President Trump and his associates and the Russians during the campaign.

Sessions stated flatly in his confirmation hearing in January that he “did not have communications with the Russians” during the campaign. He was also asked in written questions whether he had “been in contact with anyone connected to any part of the Russian government about the 2016 election, either before or after election day” and Sessions responded, “no.”
However, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday that Sessions had indeed been in contact with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. on at least two occasions during that time. The Post report came on the heels of a New York Times story reporting first, that British and Dutch intelligence provided information about meetings in Europe between Russian officials and Trump campaign associates and second, that U.S. intelligence intercepted communications with Russian officials discussing contacts with Trump associates.

The American people deserve an honest, independent, comprehensive, and thorough investigation into this matter, which will be impossible to conduct with Sessions at the helm of the Justice Department.
