Congress misses crucial opportunity to rein in Trump’s illegal war

Washington – Win Without War Executive Director Sara Haghdoosti released the following statement in response to the Senate’s vote on Senator Tim Kaine’s War Powers Resolution:

“Five years after the Senate last voted to rein in unauthorized war with Iran, we’re back at the same crossroads. This time, too many lawmakers have acquiesced to Trump’s reckless strategy: using military escalation to manufacture crisis, silence dissent, and distract from his growing legal and political vulnerability. At the same time, we’re grateful to Senator Kaine for his leadership and to every senator who stood up for the Constitution and the will of the people. While the resolution did not pass, today’s vote makes clear that the movement to restore democratic checks on war powers is not going away — and must only grow stronger from here.

“This vote comes at a time when Trump is using war to not only terrorize communities abroad, but deepen chaos at home — from his criminal convictions to attacks on immigrants and LGBTQ+ communities. This month, Trump deployed Marines and National Guard troops to Los Angeles in response to protests against his immigration raids — a stark display of his willingness to stifle dissent and politicize the military.

“While a temporary ceasefire with Iran may be in place, that doesn’t eliminate the risk. Trump must deescalate before more U.S. troops and families in Iran, Israel and across the regionare put in harm’s way — and Congress needs to do its part to signal the diplomatic solutions its constituents really want.

“This isn’t the end of the fight. Congress must keep working to reassert its war powers and push for real diplomacy over unilateral force. People in the United States want peace, accountability, and safety — not more endless war. ”
