WASHINGTON Win Without War Advocacy Director Erica Fein released the following statement regarding the Senate’s passage of Senator Tim Kaine’s Iran war powers resolution (S.J.Res.68):

“Today, the Senate declared unequivocally: we will not allow Donald Trump to drag the United States into another endless war of choice against the will of the people.

“The Trump administration’s reckless foreign policy has already brought us to the brink of war with Iran twice. By passing Sen. Kaine’s war powers resolution with bipartisan support, the Senate took a critical step toward not only blocking a potential Trump-led war with Iran, but toward reasserting its sole constitutional power to determine when, where, and whether the United States goes to war.

“This resolution will not impede the president’s ability to protect the United States from truly imminent threats. It simply clarifies what was already a legal reality: Donald Trump cannot launch a war with Iran without the explicit authorization of congress, and that authorization does not already exist.

“Earlier this week, Win Without War joined over forty other national organizations from across the progressive movement in calling on the Senate to pass Sen. Kaine’s resolution. We applaud the Senators who voted against endless war, and commend Sen. Kaine’s leadership in advancing this legislation. We now urge the House to expeditiously take up and pass Sen. Kaine’s resolution and send it to Trump’s desk. With Congress’s continued leadership, backed by an organized and activated grassroots, we can be the necessary counterweight to Trump’s pro-war foreign policy.”
