WASHINGTON — Win Without War Executive Director Stephen Miles released the following statement regarding Donald Trump’s plan to nominate Rep. John Ratcliffe as the next Director of National Intelligence:

“Donald Trump made another discomforting move this week toward a full Kangaroo Cabinet by nominating Rep. John Ratcliffe, a Trump loyalist with no apparent qualifications, to be our nation’s top Intelligence official.

“Ratcliffe is a two-term Congressman with no foreign policy or national security experience whose claim to fame is vigorously defending Trump on national television during last week’s Mueller hearings. Should Ratcliffe win Senate confirmation, Trump will have further cemented his cabinet’s reputation as a group of sycophants and ideologues, willing to put the President’s personal interests above all else.

“Trump is also playing with fire by nominating a political ally with no substantive experience to a Cabinet position atop a significant portion of our national security apparatus. Similar nominations in the past have led to abject failures, mismanagement, and gross incompetence that have cost people their lives. And we simply cannot afford to have someone like Ratcliffe who is skeptical of nefarious foreign influence in our democratic processes leading the agency tasked to prevent it.

“Donald Trump may want yet another Cabinet member whose sole mission is to protect him, but that doesn’t mean the Senate has to confirm him. Rejecting such an unqualified nominee should be a no-brainer, and we hope the Senate does just that.”
