WashingtonWin Without War Executive Director Sara Haghdoosti released the following statement responding to President Biden’s phone call yesterday with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, indicating a policy shift on Gaza if Israel does not change course:

“President Biden’s demand for an immediate ceasefire is welcome, as is his call for an end to unconditional support for Prime Minister Netanyahu’s brutal, failing war in Gaza. But his assertion that accountability should only come for future Israeli government actions ignores the reality of the situation in Gaza and of U.S. law. The president can and should take action now.

“Every day we wait, Palestinians in Gaza are dying from bombings, disease, and a mounting famine at the hands of a Netanyahu government that has shown no willingness to abide by the assurances it has made to the Biden administration to protect civilians.

“The fact is that President Biden does not have to wait for the Netanyahu government to make another deadly misstep to take action. Under existing U.S. law, the IDF’s actions in Gaza should already have triggered the suspension of U.S. military aid to Israel. President Biden should enforce that law immediately.  No more arms transfers to facilitate the indiscriminate killing and starvation of Palestinians or the bombing of aid workers.”
