Win Without War Condemns Inhumane Treatment and Deportations of Haitian Migrants

WASHINGTON — Win Without War Executive Director Stephen Miles and Deputy Director Sara Haghdoosti released the following statement regarding the Biden administration’s deportations of Haitian migrants and asylum-seekers at the U.S. southern border:
“The images coming out of Texas are horrific. But they are not the exception — they are simply a more visible reminder of the daily violence, xenophobia, and white supremacy that lies behind U.S. migrant policy. It’s time for a change.
“The United States’ borders should be places of peace and refuge for those seeking safety. Instead, they are sites of cruelty, violence, and fear. The Biden administration’s treatment of Haitians fleeing multiple, terrible crises is abhorrent, immoral, and rooted in racism and militarism. We call on President Biden to immediately end the deportations; terminate Title 42, a Trump-era policy that is being used as legal justification for expulsions; grant these Haitians humanitarian parole; provide humanitarian assistance to all in need; investigate CBP for their actions; and forge a new migration policy rooted in peace, justice, and human rights.
“The inhumane treatment of migrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers is nothing new for the United States. Under the Trump administration, this was taken to a terrible extreme. But while the Biden administration promised a reversal of the anti-immigrant, white supremacist policies of the Trump era, their actions fall far short of their promise.
“The violence and hostility directed at Haitians also cannot be disconnected from the reality that U.S. policies have helped fuel the intersecting political, economic, and humanitarian crises Haitians are fleeing. Coups, military interventions, exploitative economic policies, and, most recently, an assassination conducted by U.S.-trained Colombian mercenaries — this history of failed foreign policies must be replaced by one that serves the Haitian people and stops fueling the instability and displacement causing migration in the first place.”
